SSD UK Market Overview
1. SATA 2.5” SSDs (Legacy but still very popular)
Capacities most common: they replace failing HDDs
schools & corporates still demand 128GB / 256GB SATA SSDs for
extending life of older Dell/HP/Lenovo kit
2. M.2 SATA (Slim laptops / some desktops)
Capacities most common:
256GB / 512GB – biggest movers
128GB – less common now, phasing out but still appears in refurb
1TB – appearing more in higher-spec corporate machines
Reality in UK channel:
Popular in ultrabooks & slim corporate laptops (2017 onwards)
Still SATA speeds, but form factor is critical in thin devices
3. M.2 NVMe (PCIe Gen3/Gen4 mainstream & performance)
Capacities most common:
256GB – entry-level NVMe, big in budget retail builds
512GB – the current mainstream standard across laptops &
desktops
1TB – rapidly growing, especially in gaming, workstation, and mid/high-
end laptops
2TB – enthusiast/gamer and workstation class, not mainstream
corporate
Reality in UK channel:
NVMe has overtaken SATA in new builds (desktops, laptops,
workstations)
Corporate laptops (ThinkPad, Latitude, EliteBook) shipping 512GB as
standard, 1TB in higher configs
Refurb channel: still a bit rare, but growing fast
4. PCIe Add-in-Card (High-performance niche, servers/workstations)
Capacities most common:
1TB / 2TB / 4TB
Reality: Only seen in enterprise/workstation refresh (HP Z-series, Dell
Precision)
