Overview
Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) remain an essential part of data storage, particularly in servers, NAS, desktops, and legacy IT systems where capacity and reliability matter more than raw speed.
At XUM, all used HDDs are fully data-sanitised, SMART-tested, and re-certified for resale – extending the life of thousands of drives while supporting our circular IT and sustainability goals.
3.5″ DESKTOP & ENTERPRISE HDDs
Form Factor: 3.5″ drives dominate in desktop PCs, entry-level servers, NAS systems and data-centre arrays.
Interfaces:
- SATA (Serial ATA): Still the most common interface for client and near-line enterprise storage. SATA 6 Gb/s (SATA III) drives remain widely used across 500 GB – 16 TB capacities.
- SAS (Serial Attached SCSI): Found in higher-end workstations, servers, and storage arrays. 6 Gb/s and 12 Gb/s SAS drives offer enterprise-grade reliability and sustained throughput.
Capacities Most Common:
- 500 GB / 1 TB / 2 TB: Entry-level and mid-range desktop replacements; ideal for corporate and education refurb stock.
- 3 TB / 4 TB / 6 TB: Typical for small business NAS and server rebuilds.
- 8 TB / 10 TB / 12 TB + : Enterprise and data-centre drives designed for 24 × 7 operation, often helium-filled for lower vibration and power draw.
Speeds (RPM):
- 5 400 RPM: Energy-efficient desktop and NAS drives.
- 7 200 RPM: The standard for performance desktop and mid-range server use.
- 10 000 / 15 000 RPM (SAS): High-speed enterprise disks for transactional workloads and hybrid arrays.
2.5″ LAPTOP & SMALL-FORM HDDs
Form Factor: 2.5″ drives are common in laptops, SFF desktops, thin clients and embedded systems.
Interfaces:
- SATA: Standard across client HDDs; widely available up to 2 TB.
- SAS 12 Gb/s (Enterprise 2.5″): Used in blade servers and high-density storage systems.
Capacities Most Common:
- 320 GB / 500 GB / 1 TB: Legacy and education laptop refresh stock.
- 2 TB + : High-capacity mobile workstations and rugged portable drives.
Speeds (RPM):
- 5 400 RPM: Quiet, power-efficient standard for laptops.
- 7 200 RPM: Performance notebooks and SFF systems.
LEGACY INTERFACES & SPECIALISED MODELS
While SATA and SAS dominate, XUM also refurbishes and supplies:
- IDE / PATA drives (40-pin): For industrial control systems and embedded equipment still in operation.
- SCSI / Fibre Channel (FC): Used in legacy data-centre hardware; re-certified for maintenance and spares.
TESTING & RENEWAL PROCESS
Every used HDD supplied by XUM undergoes:
- Full SMART analysis and sector scan to verify health.
- DoD-compliant data erasure or physical wipe.
- Surface remap and firmware validation to ensure stability.
- Graded output — drives categorised for enterprise, desktop, or refurb use with full traceability.
